What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapeutic model that focuses on modifying our relationship with the inevitable struggle in our lives. It builds on the principle of traditional cognitive therapies; and also incorporates the philosophy and practices of mindfulness. It supports the client to firstly develop a new perspective with respect to life and struggle. Secondly, the focus shifts towards learning new skills to incorporate their new understanding, in order to live a more fulfilling life.

Who Benefits from ACT?

ACT has been empirically proven to be effective in many clinical scenarios, such as anxiety, depression and chronic pain. However, it is also beneficial for people with general struggles in life or those who want to improve their overall wellbeing.

What is the First Step?

Counselling is not a ‘one size fit all’ process. It is important for the Specialist to have a comprehensive understand of the needs and preferences of the individual client. Therefore, an intake interview is the first step to a successful and rewarding counselling experience.

What does ACT Consist of?

After the intake, the client will work collaboratively with a Specialist in a safe and confidential environment. Methods such as guided exploration, psycho-education, experiential exercise and meditation will be used to explore unhelpful habits and develop alternative patterns. Meditation is also often used as a tool to practice and incorporate new values in to the client’s life.
